On Thursday, January 19, 2023, Steve Vai and violinist/educator Suzie Collier (you might recognize her as Jacob Collier’s mother) came to our campus in Hollywood for a special event covering multiple topics. The first portion of the conversation, titled “Success In An Ever Changing World,” allowed the two musicians to chat about how to perceive personal successes as a musician and creative individual. Vai and Collier shared many insightful and meaningful anecdotes from their own lives, and gave our Musicians Institute students some sage advice.

Check out this clip below to listen to what Vai considers the “true meaning” of success:

As the two musicians finished up their conversation, Steve Vai remained to host his own guitar clinic in the final hour. Vai took this moment to give the students what they’ve been waiting for: his guitar playing skills. Vai played a long to a few tracks, and the energy immediately rose around the concert hall.

Towards the end of the clinic, we did a raffle for the the Ibanez JEM7VP electric guitar, generously donated to us by our friend over at Ibanez Guitars! Our lucky winner was MI guitar student, Chen-wei, and he posed for a few photos with Vai.

The clinic was full of many wonderful insights and advice, kicking off an inspiring start to our Winter 2023 quarter! One quote that stood out to us while Vai played away on his guitar and should inspire all musicians:

“Never underestimate the power of your good ideas.”

Keep practicing, creating, and dreaming! How do you measure your success?
