As musicians, we are always looking to expand our knowledge, vocabulary, and musical depth. Oftentimes, after we hit a new plateau, there may be a lull in our progress and we find ourselves looking for the next flurry of inspiration. One way to speed up this process is to check out new drummers that perhaps you have heard of, perhaps not. Once we lock in on bonafide inspiration, we are fortunate to live in a world where the resources available to us online are almost limitless. Here are four drummers that I have done a deep dive on in recent years and I happily pass along to you for your own knowledge.

Joe Chambers

Overshadowed by his more famous bass playing brother Paul, Joe Chambers is a bit of an unsung hero in the jazz world. Just check out his playing on the 1966 Blue Note album Mode for Joe. Chambers’ slick style and intricate chops will make you want to deep dive into all of Joe’s amazing playing.

Mick Avory

Drummer for the Kinks for their most productive years Mick Avory played with attitude and grit, perfectly complimenting the driving hooks of the angst-ridden Davies’ brothers songwriting. Mick’s stark drumming is on full display on the song “Strangers” from the Kinks 1970 release, Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround, Part One.

Don Heffington

Known as a co-founder of the band Lone Justice, Don Heffington played on a number of hits for Bob Dylan, the Wallflowers, Dwight Yoakam, and Ron Sexsmith. Don’s recording career spanned over 50 years until his death in 2021. His beautiful laid back pocket can be heard on the track “Saint Bernard” on the 2015 release by Ron Sexsmith, Carousel One.

Chris Powell

A Nashville workhorse, Chris Powell is on everybody’s record! Chris plays with a deep pocket and there is a secretive magic underlying his playing. Chris is often seen in the studio with MI alumni Brian Allen (bass) playing for A list artists. Most recently Chris held the drum chair down for megastar Brandi Carlile. Chris’s playing is clearly represented on the Carlile track “Sinners, Saints and Fools” from the 2021 release, In These Silent Days.

Check these amazing drummers out if you are looking for some new inspiration. Happy listening!
