Earlier this year, producer Skrillex teamed up with fellow producer Fred Again and rapper Flowdan to create their track, “Rumble,” which instantly made waves in the electronic music scene for its unique and intense bass line.
Understanding the sound design behind the rumble bass in “Rumble” can help you better understand how successful producers today are creating. On that note, we teamed up with Musicians Institute Electronic Music Production instructor Joe “Computo” Caputo to put on a masterclass for anyone looking for inspiration in their productions. In the course of an hour, Computo dipped into the basics of sound design, how to remake this exact bass line, and how taking electronic music production courses at MI can help you better understand all of this.
The collaboration between Skrillex and Fred Again works so well as it shows off the best of both artists’ talents and styles. The aspect of working with others and taking inspiration from collaborations is one of the biggest values of studying production at a school like Musicians Institute. Throughout your classes, you will work on your own projects, while also working with classmates and getting experiences that you will encounter once you graduate and are working the real music studios in your career.
At MI, you’ll learn how to create a foundation for your rumble bass sound using a synthesizer or other sound source. You’ll also learn how to enhance your sound with effects processing, experimenting with different effects like distortion, filtering, and modulation to give your rumble bass more character and impact.
